RICHMOND, Virginia – UNCW will begin its quest at a Colonial Athletic Association women’s basketball title as the No. 8 seed when the postseason festivities begin on Wednesday, March 7, inside Drexel’s Daskalakis Athletic Center.
The Seahawks’ first round opponent will be a familiar foe as they will face ninth-seeded Towson in the opening game of the tournament. UNCW and Towson squared off on Thursday evening with the Seahawks battling for a 64-53 victory over the Tigers inside Trask Coliseum.
Both UNCW (11-18) and Towson (9-20) finished the CAA portion of their campaigns with a 4-14 record, but the Seahawks earned the higher seed by virtue of a higher RPI rating on Sunday morning. Each team won on its home floor and defeated the same league opponents.
The winner of Wednesday’s first round game advances to the quarterfinals on Thursday, Mar. 8, at noon against top-seeded Drexel. The Dragons earned a share of the regular season title with James Madison after both teams compiled a 16-2 mark against league opponents. Like UNCW and Towson, the Dragons and the Dukes needed the league’s RPI tiebreaker to determine the seeding for this week’s tourney.
The first round, quarterfinal and semifinal games will air exclusively on CAA.tv, while the championship game can be seen on NBC Sports Philadelphia, NBC Sports Washington and SNY in addition to be available online via CollegeSportsLive.
