WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Crafty freshman point guard Kai Toews of UNCW has picked up Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week honors for the third time.
The Tokyo playmaker averaged 18.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 9.5 assists as UNCW split a pair of games last week against William & Mary and Elon. Toews was previously honored by the conference when he shared ROW honors on Dec. 3, 2018, and collected the award on his own on Jan. 7, 2019.
Toews, who ranks second among all NCAA Division I players with 7.8 assists per game, converted 54 percent (13-of-24) from the field and 90 percent (9-of-10) at the free throw line, He has already set the freshman single season assist record and is currently tied with all-time great John Goldsberry for fifth on UNCW’s single season list with 172 dimes.
The 6-2, 180-pound Toews poured in a career-high 23 points, grabbed three rebounds and doled out seven assists in a 93-88 victory over William & Mary last Thursday. He followed that up with 13 points, seven rebounds and 12 assists in an 89-82 loss to Elon on Saturday.
The Seahawks begin the second half of their CAA schedule on Thursday when Towson visits Trask Coliseum for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
