WILMINGTON, North Carolina – With the season opener just one week away, the UNCW men’s basketball team is predicted to finish in the upper half of the Colonial Athletic Association by most college basketball publications and senior forward Devontae Cacok continues to draw high praise from respected hoops observers.
The Seahawks, who open the regular season next Tuesday, Nov. 6, at Campbell, play their final preseason tune-up on Friday when NCAA Division III William Peace visits Trask Coliseum for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
UNCW battled Atlantic Coast Conference member Clemson to the wire last Saturday before falling, 78-67, to the Tigers in a special Hurricane Florence relief exhibition in Wilmington.
Athlon Sports featured a photograph of the talented Cacok and included him on its First-Team All-CAA listing, calling the Riverdale, Ga., product “a reliable presence” for the Seahawks, who were picked to wound up fifth in the conference.
Lindy’s College Basketball Preview, meanwhile, labeled Cacok as “a freakish athlete” and tabbed the 6-7, 240-pounder as the CAA’s Preseason Player-of-the-Year. The magazine predicted the Seahawks to finish sixth in the league.
One of the oldest publications, Street & Smith’s, has the Seahawks finishing fifth in the circuit. Once again, Cacok was selected First-Team All-CAA and the active inside player was chosen as the second best offensive rebounder in the land.
