WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Freshman point guard Kai Toews of UNCW has been named the Colonial Athletic Association’s Rookie-of-the-Week after steering the Seahawks to a pair of key men’s basketball road victories at James Madison and Towson.
The surging Seahawks outlasted JMU, 86-83, in double overtime late Thursday and handled Towson, 67-61, in a Saturday matinee to leapfrog into a tie for fourth place in the CAA with a 2-1 record. An impact newcomer from Tokyo, Japan, Toews played a pivotal role in both victories.
He averaged 9.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 10.5 assists in the two victories and broke all-time great John Goldsberry’s freshman assist record. He has 126 helpers this season with 15 regular season games and postseason play remaining on the schedule.
In Thursday’s thrilling win over the Dukes, Toews scored 12 points, grabbed six rebounds and dished out nine assists as the Seahawks mounted three late comebacks to subdue the Dukes.
Toews followed that with another outstanding performance early Saturday, totaling six points, six rebounds and 12 assists to help the Seahawks cap a successful road trip to Virginia and Maryland.
It marks the second time the first-year playmaker has been honored by the conference. He shared Rookie-of-the-Week honors with Delaware’s Ithiel Horton on Dec. 3.
The Seahawks return home to host Delaware (Thursday, Jan. 10) and Drexel (Saturday, Jan. 12) as the CAA schedule hits full stride.
