Christian Hollar, a senior at Hoggard High School, has been selected as an NFL Carolina Panthers Community Captain. The Carolina Panthers Community Captain program presented by Guy Roofing recognizes 10 outstanding high school student-athletes in the Carolinas each fall who excel in their sport, in the classroom and in their community. On Sunday, December 10, 2017, the winners were honored at an on-field ceremony of the Carolina Panthers home game against the Minnesota Vikings in which each Community Captain received a personalized Carolina Panthers game ball.
Christian was one of the 2017 John T. Hoggard High School Varsity football team captains and played the middle linebacker position. Last year, he made both the All-Conference and All-Area football lists, which led him to earning numerous NCAA Division 1 football offers. He has lettered in four different sports. He has excelled throughout high school in the International Baccalaureate program as well as Advanced Placement courses. Prior to high school, he was recognized by the John Hopkins Center for Gifted and Talented Youth and was placed in the school district’s academically and intellectually gifted program. At the beginning of last year, Christian created a club called Hollar for Help that focuses on increasing the core grade point averages of academically distressed athletes at John T. Hoggard High School. It involves connecting academically gifted students with athletes in order to tutor them in subjects they’re struggling in. As a result of participating in Hollar for Help, the athletes were able to meet the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) academic eligibility requirements. In addition, the academically gifted students receive volunteer service hours necessary for their individual projects. All of the athletes that participated last year earned NCHSAA eligibility.
In order to be considered as a Community Captain, individuals must maintain a 3.0 or higher grade point average, perform voluntary community service, write an essay, and be nominated by a high school official (principal, coach, athletic director or teacher) or a member of the media. The award is open to all varsity football athletes and female varsity athletes.
