Wilmington Symphony’s Artist-in-Residence
New Hanover County Schools, in partnership with the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra, is pleased to welcome cellist Ifetayo Ali. Ms. Ali will be in residency throughout the week of September 11th and will perform at the following schools as scheduled:
- Murray Middle School – Tuesday, September 12, 2017, 9:30 a.m.-10:10 a.m. in the Minnie Evans Art Center
- Roland-Grise Middle School – Wednesday, September 13, 2017, at 2:00 p.m. (for the sixth grade music electives)
- Williston Middle School – Thursday, September 14, 2017, at 9:30 a.m. New Hanover High School’s Orchestra and Snipes Academy will also be in attendance.
- Castle Hayne Elementary School – Friday, September 15, 2017; Session 1 for grades 3-5 from 12:50 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., Session 2 for grades K-2 from 1:45 p.m. – 2:15 p.m.
There is also a community performance at the Cameron Art Museum on Wednesday, September 13th at 4:00 p.m., which is open to the public.
Ms. Ali’s musical residency underscores the Orchestra’s ongoing commitment to youth education. “We are honored and privileged to have Ifetayo performing in Wilmington throughout the week,” says Executive Director Reed Wallace. “She embodies the joy and excitement of the music she performs. By featuring a young soloist we can strengthen connections to a peer group of students.”
Ms. Ali is the Junior Division 1st Place Laureate of the 2017 Annual Sphinx Competition and performed as soloist with the Sphinx Symphony Orchestra at Orchestra Hall in Detroit. Now 14, she began her musical studies on violin when she was able to stand. She was honored at the Friends of the Illinois Philharmonic Rising Stars Showcase in 2013 at age 10, when she recorded the 1st movement of the Saint-Saëns Cello Concerto No. 1 in A minor. Ms. Ali will perform at the Wilmington Symphony’s opening night concert on September 16, 2017, 7:30 p.m. at the Wilson Center. She will perform Édouard Lalo’s tuneful Cello Concerto in D minor. The concert will conclude with Ravel’s Orchestration of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition.
